The Certificate Program

It has been observed that it is common practice in Jamaican, for schools, clubs and other institutions to employ individuals as coaches based merely on their past or present performances as a competing athlete, no matter the discipline or the level of expertise.

We at G. C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport are of the conviction that all personnel who assume professional responsibility for Physical Education and Sport must have appropriate qualifications and training. They must be carefully selected and given preliminary as well as further training to ensure that they reach adequate levels of specialization.

Appropriate structures must be established for the training of personnel for Sport. Personnel who have received such training must be given a status in keeping with the duties they perform. Our Certificate Course is intended for Athletes, who have performed well at the inter-Secondary School, Club or National Level who would like to become coaches or teachers.

The Diploma Programme

Students who have completed a course of study approved by the Joint Board of Teacher Education (JBTE) and who have satisfied the conditions of passing, as set out in the regulations of the JBTE shall be deemed to have qualified for the award of the JBTE Diploma in Teaching. The G. C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport prepares students for Diplomas in Secondary Education.

The qualification for certification shall be successful completion of the programme approved by JBTE, and the possession of qualities and characteristics suitable for teaching.

The Secondary Programme prepares students to teach Physical Education to adolescents between the ages of 12 to 17, that is, from grades 7 to 11 or form 1 to 5.
